TREKKING TO THE VOLCANO CRATER LAGOA AMELIA | SAO TOME

 LAGOA AMELIA - THE GREAT AND DORMAND VOLCANO OF SAO TOME AND PRINCIPE

Located in the center of São Tomé, right in the protected park Obô, it is more than 1475 meters above sea level, the great volcanic crater where it is believed to be the zero point of the creation of the island of São Tomé and Principe. Although it is dormant, it continues being a point of fascination and where several national myths are originating.

The crater is covered by a mantle of floating plant that make magic to be on top, since it will be the ripple in all its dimension. Most of the São Tomé rivers feed on this crater.

The walk to the crater can be done in different points, being the BOM SUCESSO the most used point to start, where we have a small botanic garden with indigenous species of the country and a small lodging for visitors who decide to spend the night in the space.

The visit takes between 3 - 4 hours, always rising and then descending into the crater, which can be slippery in rainy seasons.

We advise the use of repellents due to the presence of some insects and water.
